Mozzarella sticks

Breaded melty cheesy goodness paired with a tangy marinara dip? Our mouths are watering already! This seemingly Italian dish actually originated in France in the late 1300s. Over the years, it has evolved to become a popular American snack, except that the marinara is swapped with a yummy salsa dip. If you want something different to serve with your mozzarella sticks, come up with a garlicky mayo dip for a creamy yet flavourful kick.

Calamares

Calamares

A staple beer snack for Pinoys, calamares – from the Italian word calamari meaning squid – is as good and simple as it gets. Tweak it a bit (try this beer-battered spicy calamares recipe) and you can serve it up as a tastier appetiser that works even without a bottle of brew. This appetiser is usually served with garlic mayo on the side, but you can also experiment by mixing in some sweet and sour chili sauce for a tangy twist.

Shrimp cocktail

Not a lot of restos here in the Philippines serve this appetiser, and that alone will give you an edge. Also, the fact that shrimp cocktails have been around since the early 1900s and have pretty much been viewed as high society fare is sure to entice diners into giving it a try.

The dip or cocktail sauce is really what’ll make or break this dish, so don’t be afraid to get really creative and experiment for your own signature version. Try adding Worcestershire sauce and siling labuyo for an extra kick.

Buffalo wings

Another family favourite is buffalo wings, that (as the name suggests) were first invented in Buffalo, New York. What makes it such a best-selling appetiser is its zesty orange sauce that packs some pretty impressive heat. The customary blue cheese dip, made from a rich mixture of mayonnaise and crumbled blue cheese, serves to complement the spiciness of the dish while soothing your tongue and leaving you wanting more.
